Reflecting on the story of Jesus’ triumphal entry, the Palm Sunday celebration, I find myself focusing on the massive shift from crying out “Hosanna” to crying out “Crucify Him.”

Honestly it scares me. Can we really shift from our love of the savior to hatred so quickly? When I see the inconsistency of my own emotions, it worries me. If my salvation were anchored by my life of faith and love for God, I would be in deep trouble as who knows where the wind might blow me.

But we see in this Holy Week story that Jesus is consistent and that God is faithful. He does not let the misunderstandings of the people or even his disciples deter him. He does not let their desire to make him king nor their cry for his death deter him from following the will of God.

When I see how often and how badly the disciples of Jesus in scripture misunderstand and misbehave, I am reminded of how patient God is with them and with me. I know this can sometimes be twisted to become an excuse or self justification, but it is also the hope I need for a new start each day.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercy never comes to an end. They are new every morning.

Go in Peace! Serve the Lord!
