“It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ 48 You are witnesses of all these things. 49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”” –Luke 24:47-49

One of the things I love about the Gospel of Luke is that it continues into the Acts of the Apostles. We get a direct look into the events of their lives following the resurrection of Jesus. What we find there is not necessarily what we might hope. It continues to be real life. Success and struggles both. Ups and downs as life is for us. It is also the beginning of God transforming the world through His people.

Another thing I like about the Gospel of Luke is that it is clear where the power comes from that enables the work of God to happen through his people. In Matthew we find the Great Commission telling the disciples to “GO.” Here in Luke we find the disciples being told to wait. They are learning that it will not be by their strength that they accomplish the work and witness that they are called to do. They learn that the power to do what they are being sent to do will come from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit both empowers their witness and also makes that witness effective.

After Pentecost we hear Luke’s version of the Great Commission in Acts 1:8 (NLT) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

We too have the power of the Holy Spirit at work in and through us. We too have the power to be God’s witnesses here in San Jose, in California and the United States and to the end of the earth.

I pray that you can get a glimpse of God at work through you. I pray that you will grow in your boldness and love so that your witness is empowered by the Holy Spirit to bring forgiveness and faith to others.

Remember the power that rose Jesus from the dead is now at work in and through you.

We are an Easter people.

Serving with you in Christ,

Pastor Jim Cords
