Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him. 32 The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this:

“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter.  And as a lamb is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. 33 He was humiliated and received no justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”

34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?” 35 So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus. – Acts 8:30-35

Once I look beyond the teleportation of Philip in this story, I love that God’s Word in the Old Testament continues to be a witness for what God has done for the world in Christ. There are certainly times when we need teachers to help us see a deeper implication in the meaning of the Scriptures. More often I think just mulling it over and discussing with brothers and sisters in Christ is all the Holy Spirit needs to significantly bless and lead us through God’s Word.

“How can I, unless someone instructs me?” Well the someone does not necessarily need to be an expert. We learn from one another as we look at Scripture and consider its context and implications. Also the Holy Spirit often uses the Scripture to open our eyes to see what God is seeking to do in our lives today. When we pray with an open heart and mind, God reveals Himself and His will for us in the Scripture. It certainly helps to add to our prayer and conversation the aids that are often available in our study Bibles. I am particularly fond of the cross references that can lead us to other verses that speak to similar issues and help us to see that greater witness of the whole of Scripture.

“Father, instruct us by your Holy Spirit and provide conversations for us so that we can grow in our knowledge of you and of your will for our lives. Speak to us both through your Word and through each other. Give us the desires of your heart so that our lives and relationships would be shaped by your love, goodness and direction. In Jesus name. AMEN!”
