The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
(Lamentations 3:22-23)

I don’t know about you, but I like routine.  I like predictability.  I like having at least a small sense of what the day is going to bring.  Okay, fine.  If you know me, you know that I like to have more than just a small sense of what it’s going to bring!  And, these days, I find myself waking up and wondering what the day will bring.  Some days are full of “new” – new updates, new timelines, new orders, new rhythms.  Other days blur together and start to feel monotonous – the same old same.

In Lamentations, scripture reminds us that there is one thing that is indeed new every single day.  But not in a “hmm, I wonder…” kind of way.  It is a newness that is predictable.  A newness that is familiar.  A newness that is refreshing.  A newness that carries with it a whole new set of grace for the day.

Listen to these words and rest in the newness of God’s mercy every morning.  And then, may we extend that same set of new grace and mercy to those around us – yes, even to the ones who we’ve been cooped up with and who drove us nuts the day before!

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
