The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. 3 Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest. 4 He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: 5 “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!” 6 The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah – Psalm 50:1-6

I have had this Psalm ruminating in my heart and mind throughout the day today. Sometimes my eyes see the judgment of God and my guilt leads me to fear. But when I recognize the beauty and the relationship that I have been brought into through the love of Jesus. I am reminded of the heart of God.

Over the last decade God has prompted me over and over again with the reminder that all we do as the people of God flows from who God is. Unfortunately I need this constant prompting because far too often I find myself slipping back into a habit of responding to the people and world around me based on what I see in them or in it. The realities in front of us are not unimportant, they are just not the starting place.

The LORD is the starting place. In the Psalm today we are first reminded that God is the Almighty creator and the Lord of heaven and earth. That He is present and active in the world. And He is the judge. God determines good and bad. God determines right and wrong.

We live in this amazing covenant relationship with God. Who He is then sets the course for how we live and act in response to people and the world around us.

When I manage to live with God’s character as the beginning point. I find significantly more motivation and courage to respond rather than react toward others. Because of who God is I can love and care and even sometimes (though imperfectly) represent the LORD to others so that they too can experience His presence, goodness, beauty and love. The heavens declare his righteousness and sometimes we do as well.

May God bless you today with many reminders of His presence beauty and love and perhaps give you an opportunity to let Him shine through you to the people around you.
