Unintentional Witness

She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem. – Luke 2:38

I love the story of how Anna overhears Simeon talking with Joseph and Mary. This overheard conversation erupts in praise and witness.

Anna knew that the people were eagerly awaiting the Messiah. As soon as she got wind that the wait was now over, she is eager to tell everyone. I wonder how often our conversations are overheard and how the ripple of those overheard words carry others to Jesus.

I know a lot of people who are uncomfortable bringing up the topic of faith to strangers. Is it possible that the indirect witness of being overheard talking about faith with fellow believers might create a ripple of praise to God and many more conversations about Jesus. I wonder if we too might be ready to respond to others the way Anna does.

Now I don’t doubt that Anna’s devotion to God and time spent in the temple had sensitized her heart and ears to the presence of God. Nor do I doubt that the exuberance of her joy was rooted in the hope that had been cultivated through years of prayer and abiding anticipation. I just hope that we too can have that same openness and be elevated to praise and witness through the witness of others in our lives.
Have you heard stories of how God is showing up for others around you? Do you pass on the joy of that good news to others.

As I write this, my fourth grandchild is coming into the world. I am eager to share the goo news of her birth. I want to suggest that the world is pregnant with kairos moments of God showing up and giving evidence of His presence, love, and blessing. Share those stories. Sing those praises. Allow the joy of the Lord in your life to be overheard.

Lord thank you for blessing this day with your presence and love.
