John 14:1-3

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.“

As I thought about preparing this devotion, I thought a lot about the sermon message from a couple of Sundays ago, when Pastor Jim preached about the presence of the Holy Spirit and its role in our lives. The message really resonated with me. I truly believe that the Holy Spirit guides our thoughts, stirs emotions in inexplicable ways, motivates us to be the hands and feet of Christ through service to others and fills our hearts with the love needed to treat each other with compassion, respect and dignity.

As great as Pastor Jim’s message was, the most moving aspect of the service for me was when they played Hillsong Worship’s “Who you say I am”.

“Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed.

I’m a child of God, yes I am.

In my Father’s House, there’s a place for me.

I’m a child of God, Yes I am.”

Wow, what a powerful message this is. Whenever I hear this song, and particularly the chorus, I feel an emotion stir within me that I can’t explain. I believe that it’s the Holy Spirit at work, so I suppose it was an appropriate choice for the service, given Pastor Jim’s message.

I feel so reassured about my faith on the hope that Christ is preparing a place for me in my Father’s House. During times like these of a once in a lifetime pandemic, street violence associated with social injustice and political chaos and unrest, one of the few constants we can cling to is the love of our Father and the promise of Christ’s redemption that we will join him in eternity.

This certainty allows us the confidence that God is there for us, in whatever circumstances we face.  He will continue to be, if we believe also in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our belief in Christ lays the foundation for hope for our future. A future devoid of the chaos of today’s times, but of the peace associated with a place in our Father’s House.

Heavenly Father,

We give you thanks and praise for the gift of your son, Jesus. We give you thanks for the promise his sacrifice provides for us. In spite of the circumstances that many of us are currently facing, we thank you for the blessings that we may often overlook, such as the certainty of your constant love and the certainty, that through your Son, you will provide a place for us in your House.

We also give you thanks and praise for the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide our hearts and minds, motivate us to serve others, understand the meaning of your word in scripture and to help us live a life worthy of the love you have for us.

In your Son’s name we pray. Amen.
