Getting All Dressed Up (an interactive devotional)

Directions: Take some time in a quiet place.  Be prepared to pray, to worship, to listen to the Holy Spirit.  Then begin.

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:12-17

Did you know that you are God’s beloved people?  Chosen, holy and much-loved.  Sit with that thought for a moment.  Let that reality wash over you.  And pray, “Heavenly Father, it blows me away that you have chosen me!  That you have made me holy – set apart to do your will.  And that I am dearly loved by you.  I need your love and am grateful for it.”

(Sit back, close your eyes and pray.)

So, God’s loved and chosen ones, here’s how to get dressed in the morning.  Put on these clothes:

  • Compassion
  • Kindness, meekness and patience
  • A forgiving heart – receiving and giving
  • Love

When you get dressed in these clothes, you are clothed in Christ.  You are dressed up just like him!

(Ponder that clothing list for a moment, and let the Holy Spirit speak to you.)

When you get dressed in these clothes, what else happens? He gives you peace. Sit back and let that one wash over you.  “Let the peace of Christ rule in your body,” washing away the anxiety, the doubts, the fears.  He gives you peace.

(Take a moment to let that sink in.)

When God’s peace begins to rule in your heart, I can guarantee that your next experience is gratitude. “Lord, I’m so grateful for your peace.  Still my thoughts and my heart; fill me to the brim with the peace that comes in trusting you.”

(Sit back and dwell on God’s peace.)

Do you know what you are doing as you follow these steps (Word, prayer, meditation)?  You are letting the Word of Christ “dwell in you richly.”  You are letting it settle in you from head to toe.  Settle in it!

(Go back and read the words again, so they can dwell in you for the rest of the day.)

Do you like to sing?  Turn on your favorite Christian radio station, or set up your playlist so you can sing along.  Today, in the car or at home (or in the shower), just sing out your praise to God!  Music is a powerful way of letting God’s Word dwell in you richly. (Maybe you like Air 1; or perhaps, more traditional, you like hymns.  Try Lutheran Public Radio!)

(Tune in to your favorite Christian radio station and sing along!)

For the rest of the day, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to him.

Get all dressed up in Christ!  And… give thanks.
