His Love Endures Forever

Read Psalm 136

I love the Psalms. They offer a full, robust, and unapologetic look at what it means to live the life of faith. They are filled with unreserved praise, desperate pleas, steadfast hope, and confidence that the God who has been faithful will continue to be so. They are willing to explore every facet of what it is like to live as God’s people in relationship with Him.

In this Psalm, we read and pray along with the writer as we remember who God is and what he has done. Every step of the way, each of these reminders turns our attention towards the unwavering love that God has for us in all circumstances. As a community at St. Tim’s and as a society here in Santa Clara County, we are in a time full of anxiety, unknowns, and questions. But there is one thing that we do know: God’s love endures forever. God’s people often looked to the ways that God had been faithful in the past and that gave them confidence that He would continue to do so in the future. And so it is for us.

As you turn your heart to the Lord today, I want to encourage you to spend a few minutes with this exercise. Every verse in this Psalm is a statement followed by the response, “His love endures forever.” Some of these statements recognize God’s character, some of them are reminders of great deeds of the past, and some give us assurance of how He will continue to be faithful into the future.

Spend some time and write your own version of this Psalm. Reflect on God’s character. What is it about God that serves as a reminder of his love for you today? Write it out! For me, it might look like this. “God is faithful in all circumstances, His love endures forever.”

Also consider specific ways that God has been faithful to you and shown you His love in the past. Are there hard times he has led you through? Immense blessings that you are thankful for? Even little things that remind you of His grace? Write it out!

And perhaps leave a few blank spaces at the bottom- “_______________________, His love endures forever.” During the coming days and weeks, God will most certainly show you His love. Fill in the blanks as He does and remember that in all circumstances, you are loved by God.
