MARCH 23 by Pastor Jonna

A Necessary Rest

Read: Exodus 16:9 – 30

Last week, I thought a lot about rest and forced simplicity. Many of us are used to going here and going there, with so many things to do, places to be, and people to see. Tuesday, that all changed, and we were all at home. Some of us were swamped with work, trying to make the necessary changes with our work and other commitments. Some of us received the difficult news of being laid off from work. Others of us were out of school and trying to figure out what to do with all of our time.

Last week, all of us began to process what this new temporary reality might look like, and we were stripped away of our regular rhythms and sense of normalcy. We were required to stay home as much as possible and to live simple lives.

As Scripture shows us time and again, we are inclined to work, to gather, to do, out of fear. Scripture tells us that we were created to work, that is true. But we were also created to rest. The seventh day was given to us as a day of rest, because we need it. Like little children fighting naps, we tend to fight a day of rest. Now, we have that very real opportunity to rest. What a gift that is!

I invite you to rest for a full day this week. Sleep in, worship, read Scripture as a family or with friends, take a walk, do things that bring you life and remind you of God’s presence.

Heavenly Father, You are our provider and You have created us to work and to rest. We thank You that You invite us into freedom of rest. Help us to trust You and to live in Your freedom. We ask that You provide for our needs and that we would trust You to give us our daily bread. In the name of Jesus, who is the bread of life, we pray. Amen.
