“Practicing Our Faith, Every Day”

Read: Romans 12:9 – 21

Saturday night, Alek, and I watched a movie that many of you have already seen and love. We watched “A Beautiful Day In the Neighborhood,” the movie based on Fred Rogers’ relationship with a journalist from Esquire Magazine.

Alek broke the silence. “Wow. I want to be like Fred Rogers. He didn’t simply pay lip service to Jesus’ command to love our neighbor; he lived it.” We marveled at his wife, Joanne’s comment that “Rog” practiced his way of life every day.

Fred Rogers sought to walk in the way of Jesus, and this way is what Paul outlines for the church in Romans 12. I invite you to take a look at verses 9 – 21 again. Pay attention to and list what Paul exhorts us to do (have genuine love, abhor evil, rejoice in hope…). List what he says not to do (do not curse, do not be haughty, do not repay evil for evil…). If I counted correctly, I counted 22 things Paul says to do and 7 not to do.

Read through the list of what Paul encourages us to do. Is there something you feel called to do or to change in your life so that your life looks more like Jesus’? I encourage you to practice that this week. There may not be much that we can do to change our current situations, but there may much that we can do to alter our perspectives about them. I encourage you to use this time at home to serve others in creative ways to show the love of Jesus.

Pray: Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your word and Your presence. We pray that our lights would shine before others that they might see our good deeds and give glory to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
