This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

Sometimes the daily news gets me down.  (I won’t go into details; no need to discourage you, too!)  And although I want to learn as much as I can about this virus, sometimes I learn things I’d rather not know.  And so I get down in the dumps.

It is at those times that I need to be reminded of the bigger picture.  God is in control; he can bring good out of this mess; our future is secure in His capable hands.

I also need to be reminded of the smaller picture: today.  Just today.  As I look out on the sunshine, the greenery and the flowers, it seems that “today” knows nothing of “tomorrow.”  “Today” is simply doing “today.”

The Psalmist reminds us that the Lord made “today.”  And, it seems, we are made for “today.”   99% of what we worry about is either in the future (and may never happen); or in the past (over which we now have no control).  Jesus said we shouldn’t worry about tomorrow.  Rather, he said, look at the birds and the flowers – neither of which worry about tomorrow, or even plan for it.  And put your trust in God.

This is the day that the Lord has made!  Let us rejoice and be glad in it… and let tomorrow take care of itself, for tomorrow is in God’s hands.

Lord Jesus, I leave tomorrow in your hands – in your good, capable hands.  Help me to do what I can to plan for it, and then leave it there – without the worry that often comes alongside.

In the meantime, help me to rejoice in today’s simple joys, and to use it according to your greater purposes.  Thank you for all the gifts you have given me, especially for what you have given me through your death and resurrection.  Keep me focused on those things, for I pray in your name, Amen.
