“How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!”  Psalm 133:1

Not once in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be sitting in a boat on the Sea of Galilee, attending a worship service, and yet, on a crisp fall morning this past November, I was doing just that.

Talked into taking a trip to Israel by my sister-in-law Kim, I went with her and a group from her church in Texas for an eleven day trip to the Holy Land.  That particular morning on the Sea of Galilee was an exceptionally beautiful one, and as I saw a flock of birds fly near us, I thought of how I had been given wings for this trip, just as all three of my daughters had been given wings as they attended their various colleges.

That pristine morning, the sea was calm, and the majestic mountains right by it were tall and stately.  However, I could see how a gale of wind could rush down those mountains and stir up a storm quickly.  The minister of Kim’s church spoke that morning about how Jesus calmed such a storm. He said that whatever storm we were in, God was with us, and others were sometimes experiencing the storms with us too. These are good lessons to remember during these shelter-in-place times, when we can’t see the finish line.  And just as an Israeli blue and white flag, and an American flag were flown together on that ship’s mast that delightful morning, so too I hope all of us experience unity not just in our church and nation, but with other nations as we experience this pandemic globally.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the trips that ultimately come from your hand and the lessons we learn from them.  Help us to remember during this pandemic that you are with us, as are others, and help us begin to experience true unity not only in our church but in our world.  In your Son, The Prince of Peace’s name we pray.  Amen
